Saturday night Drinking with the scouts at the Barleymoe
Tonight Elijah Craig is joined by Evan Williams, Jack Daniels and George Dickel
Elijah: Fellows we are a week and half away from the All-Star break. What surprises you?
Jack: I believe the most amazing stat about the league is the average OPS is at.744. That is the highest since season 44 if it holds.
Evan: Wasn't 44 the year the Dukes had a .749 ops and scored 996 runs.
Jack : yes
George: If it's such an important stat why aren't the pitchers measured by it?
Evan: If your wiling to do the math George it's there.
Jack: What pitching staffs are doing well this year, Evan?
Evan: Charleston (42 wins)and Helena(45 wins) are under .630 (pitching ops); San Juan(34 wins) and Seattle(389wins) are also doing well.
George: Are you trying to measure everybody by this new improved stat of yours.
Evan: Well if you use this you can compare hitters to pitchers by whether they are over or under the league average.
George :Isn't that what WAR is supposed to do?
Evan: If I gave it to you in WAR would you understand it?
George: A WAR statistic? Hell no, that should be body counts or something.
Evan: As simply as I can put this:Carlos Chantres (FAR) leads the league in Wins and has a OPS of .401; that is .343 under the league average.Pat Carter (CHR) is second in league wins, with 9, and has an OPS of .599.
George: Okay Evan you made your point we can compare every player by OPS, who are the most average offensive players this season?
Evan: Rich Winn ofToronto.743, Dayan Melendez of Louisville.743, Norm Martinson of Charleston .743, and Eddie Allen of Albuquerque.745
George: What about the pitchers?
Evan : that research takes more time George. I'll see you next week!
